How Strength Training and Yoga Helped Me During Pregnancy

Strength Training and Yoga generally have a lot of benefits, which most of us are aware of. From lifting those weights to relaxing and breathing on the Yoga mat, these two have been a blessing in disguise in my pregnancy journey.

One might consider doing these to be tiring and may ignore them because, honestly, being pregnant itself takes a lot of mental and physical energy. But trust me when I say, exercise really helps. So, as proof, I come with my own experience so you can decide for yourself.

Eases Back Pain and Growing Discomfort

A growing belly definitely leads to discomfort like pain in lower back muscles, stress in upper back muscles, and leg cramps. However, thanks to yoga specifically, a little back massage was enough for me to ease those cramps. The pregnancy-focused poses definitely worked wonders for me. Lifting weights and doing posture-based exercises helped manage the discomfort due to posture changes.

Increases Stamina

Being consistent in exercising helped me slowly gain good stamina, which was super-essential during pregnancy. Pregnancy doesn’t mean you would get to be a couch potato; in fact, my gynaecologist specifically asked me to stay physically active for an easy pregnancy journey. Imagine you are growing a human inside you, and you are supposed to be active. One would need good stamina for this entire process, and strength training specifically works wonders in this area.

Helps to Manage Blood Sugar Levels

Around 25-28 weeks of pregnancy, usually, there will be a blood test done to check the blood sugar levels. It is common to get high sugar levels during pregnancy due to multiple changes in the body. However, thanks to consistently exercising, I had normal sugar levels throughout pregnancy. Managing blood sugar levels is tricky during pregnancy due to the unexpected food cravings we get, and exercise helped me a lot.

Perfect Mood Booster

How many of us have heard about mood swings during pregnancy? I mean, we go through mood swings during our menstrual cycles, and pregnancy is beyond that. It is not always possible to manage these nasty mood swings by others, even if you have support. So, a constant source of mood boost for me during pregnancy was exercise. I know a walk with fresh air or lifting weights will improve my mood, and it always has.
