What is the Meaning of Maturity?

As we grow, we tend to make certain decisions based on one sole reason – Maturity, we must act maturely; that’s how a mature person thinks. Many of us have been the mature kid growing up; the expectations on us grew alongside. That got me thinking – What does being mature or thinking in a mature way really mean?

So many situations, different circumstances, tricky emotions, and logical thoughts, all culminated into one package – Maturity. Is it holding up all the sadness/challenges within yourself, or is it sharing with others to start the healing process? Is it handling the responsibilities of your family all by yourself or sharing them with family so all of the members can grow cumulatively without compromising your growth?

Given any situation, you make a choice for yourself, and that choice could be titled mature by one person while immature by another. Same choice, different title. Some might call you too naïve for a certain choice, while some call it growth.

Take an example – nowadays, mental health has taken good prominence among our generation, and we take it seriously. If need be, we always prefer taking therapy and dealing with our emotions from the foundation so that we start the process of self-healing. We call it a mature way of living, but others might call us sensitive and childish for not being able to suck up and move on. So, what does being mature really mean?

I guess maturity could be defined as a mirage of people’s perception of life. People define maturity according to the experiences of their lives. Sometimes, if people get a choice, they could even change their perception, which redefines maturity for them. For example, our elders have gone through the hardships of life with the bare minimum support, and they clearly did not have a channel to share their challenges with anybody. Naturally, they had to keep their problems with them and move on in life, making them emotionally tough.

But, given an opportunity, I am sure that they will try to share those problems which make their heart light and will realise that, after all, therapy is good.

In the end, we could redefine maturity as a path towards a progressive outlook on life. Going above people’s perspectives, being true to your soul, and living a life that just feels right. The rest would fit like a puzzle. What do you think Maturity truly means?
