A few days ago, I saw the conversation around the classic movie, Baghban. The new generation has come up with a rather interesting perspective on this movie and how Amitabh’s character is called a red flag, while Samir Soni’s character is practical and close to reality. The older generation with whom we grew up watching the movie saw the movie purely through an emotional perspective. The new generation adds logic to the same emotions, bringing in a sensible perspective.
This conversation made me think of how the new generation has flipped the script for so many concepts that’s been around us for some time. Honestly, I didn’t even think of these concepts in that perspective. For example, gentle parenting is a concept that I never thought would ever be possible, but the new generation is trying to attempt it.
The same mindset shift has led to a better marriage where both partners are equally sharing the responsibilities without one feeling the overwhelm of unpaid labor. Men are contributing to the household chores while women are climbing the ladder in the professional world. Fathers are actually taking charge while the mothers get their much-deserved rest and recovery.
The reason that made me write this blog about this topic is due to this shift, our priorities in life has changed. Our parents had clear goals – job, marriage, kids, own house, retirement. But we have seen a different world growing up, and hence, our priorities have changed, so did the world, leading to certain complex decisions. For example, owning a house two or three decades ago was easy compared to now. The land rates have gone up, tax systems are complicated, and our salaries don’t match up to our needs. We think twice before having kids, as it is difficult to manage the expenses amidst rising societal expectations.
Our priorities now are all about experiences – travelling the world, trying different cuisines, learning about different cultures, leading a healthy lifestyle, etc. We would rather spend our Sundays going for a 10K run than cleaning the house, as the latter can wait. So, the point that I am trying to make is really simple: there is a fresh wave of breeze coming through the new generation, and the mindset shift is really shaping up to a better world. Life is hard, but the choices we make help us deal with it in a better way. What do you think?
