Why Deepavali is my favourite festival?

India is a land of festivals and we Indians go all in during the celebrations. From Makara Sankranthi and Ugadi to Dasara, we love to celebrate it with good vibes and positive energy. Amidst all these, if I need to pick my favourite festival, it has got to be Deepavali. Well, Dasara is special and it became extra special this year thanks to my debut book launch (Link: https://amzn.in/d/cqpGvwc). However, Deepavali still takes over as my favourite festival and here’s why I am extra excited during this festival.

The festival of Illumination

Who doesn’t love a bright life? A life filled with happiness, child-like energy, laughter, and good health. During Deepavali, we make it a point to light a lot of Diyas (lamps), decorate the walls with bright colourful lights and pray for a bright year. When I look at the sky and see colours sparkling, it reminds me that darkness only paves the way for bright lights to shine even brighter.

The festival of Hope

Deepavali is that festival which reminds me that no matter the turbulences I face in life, good views are always on the top of the hill which means you are on your way to that view. During Deepavali, I forget every anger or negative energy that surrounds me and only focus on the positivity around. During Deepavali, everyone shares sparkling gifts along with blessings which indicate that there’s humanity and good in every human being.

The festival of Energy

This festival gives me the joy and energy to be my own self and to bring out the child in me. Be it lighting those sparklers (sur-sur bathi, as we call it) or watching the flower pot go high, it brings out the child-like joy in my eyes. Note that, I hate bursting crackers and I am super scared of them, I still like the colourful ones from afar.

Finally, the festival with a balance

Most festivals in my household are aligned towards pooja and devotion except for Deepavali. This is the only festival where the focus is equally distributed from being devotional as well as enjoying with family. Having a mother who loves to spend most of her time in the pooja room, this festival makes me happy because she spends less time in the pooja room and more with me and the fam and the pressure of being overly devotional is a little less during this festival.

Conclusion

Like all the Indian festivals, Deepavali also has a deep significance from Indian mythology. Be it Rama’s return to Ayodhya or Narakasura’s destruction, Deepavali indicates the victory of good over evil. Much similar to this, my book, Legends of Devi Bhagavati Bhuvaneshwari, explores the story of Devi Bhagavati who fights evil and restores balance in nature. And this is yet another reason why I love Deepavali.

Happy Deepavali, everyone 🙂
